Flood Control Basin Construction Commences
On December 17, 2025 the notice to proceed letter for the construction of a flood control and infiltration basin northwest of the City of Kingman was issued to Perco Rock Company of Cedar City, Utah. This new flood control structure, named the Feldspar Basin, will hold up to 33 acre-feet (10.7 million gallons) of storm runoff at its location on BLM land south of Bull Mountain and one mile west of Stockton Hill Road. The neighborhoods in Kingman around Sierra Vista Avenue and Stockton Hill Road will see reduced storm runoff after construction is complete.
The basin will be formed by a soil cement embankment which will slowly release the detained water. The basin will also provide the benefit of allowing storm water to infiltrate into the ground, thus helping recharge the Hualapai Valley aquifer with water that might otherwise evaporate and be lost. A scientific study of the site estimates that approximately 14 acre-feet of water could infiltrate into the aquifer in an average rain year.
Construction is expected to be completed early this summer. The construction cost is $1,495,709, which is being paid for by a grant from the Arizona State Water Infrastructure Finance Authority supplemented by Mohave County Flood Control District budgeted revenue.
