Wings of Rescue to Assist in Mohave County Animal Shelter Puppy Crisis
50 of the current 80+ puppies at the Mohave County Animal Shelter and in foster will be “taking off” to find forever homes, with the transfer help of Wings of Rescue air transport charity service.
Wings of Rescue is a 501(c)3 charity, made up of volunteer pilots, that flies abandoned, homeless, and at-risk pets from overcrowded shelters and disaster areas to shelters and rescues with available space, without displacing any locally sheltered pets. In just six years, the charity has flown almost 21,000 pets to a second chance at finding new homes. Wings of Rescue plans to have their twin-engine turboprop plane fly into Kingman next Thursday for puppy pick up and then head to Utah.
In coordination with their partner, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary to Society, Wings of Rescue will be transporting the 50 puppies to sanctuaries in Kanab and Salt Lake City, where they will then be available for adoption. Earlier this year, the entities teamed up to transport 40 animals to safety in the wake of the Southern California wildfires. As a leader in the no-kill movement, Best Friends has worked with its welfare partners to help provide aid and support in increasing pet lifesaving efforts.
In 2024, over 1,000 puppies came into the Mohave County Animal Shelter. Since January 2025 alone, the shelter has already taken in 370 puppies, averaging 93 puppies a month. Without coordinated efforts from dedicated local community fosters, volunteers, and outside partner agencies, there’s no way the shelter could continue to make great strides in lifesaving efforts. Transferring these puppies will shift focus on showcasing larger and adult dogs, waiting at the shelter for their forever families.
Mohave County’s Nicole Mangiameli, Animal Shelter Manager says, “Transferring these puppies will give a better chance of finding a new home for the more than 80 adult dogs who are often overlooked when so many puppies are available. The abundance of help we are receiving from both agencies is remarkable and will make an enormous impact in our lifesaving efforts at the shelter and in the community.”
