Horizon Six Detention Basin
Date completed: February 2013
Cost: $5,200,000
Horizon Six is located in the south east part of the Lake Havasu City area and is bisected by a major drainage course, Mockingbird Wash. Flooding and sediment transport have caused significant problems over the years. During the engineering analysis of a channel system to help mitigate the flooding to the County residents in Horizon Six, it was determined that a detention basin, constructed north of the Horizon Six subdivision would reduce the peak flow during major storm events and reduce the sediment load of the run off. This would also reduce the construction and maintenance costs associated with the channelization project downstream. The construction project was awarded to Technology Construction, Inc. at the April 2, 2012 Board of Supervisors meeting for the construction of the five-basin offline detention/retention basin system along the main channel and maintenance roadway. The detention basin system outlet leads into the channel alignment at Window Rock Road.
In addition to the constructed improvements, the Flood Control District has installed additional rain gauges in the upper portion of the watersheds as part of the ALERT Flood Warning System. This will notify the County personnel of heavy rains in the area and gather data to help analyze significant storm events.
