Tierra Del Rio
Date Completed: February 2013
Cost: $1,200,000
The Tierra Del Rio project is in Fort Mohave north of Joy Lane and East of Mountain View Rd. The upstream drainage area generates 254 cubic feet per second (cfs) of sediment-laden runoff during a 100-year event that drains through streets without curbs and through some low lying homes in the neighborhood. The Tierra Del Rio Subdivision and adjacent developments have been impacted by flooding and debris flows on many occasions in the last several decades. The damage occurred in recent storms as well as flooding that took place during the statewide storms in January 2010. Subsequent smaller storms caused additional flooding and sediment transport in the area.
The design of a flood control facility incorporated three elements: 1) Construction of five basins to retain or detain storm runoff upstream of the impacted homes. These basins will intercept soil and debris as well as reduce the 100-year event runoff by half. 2) Concrete lining of two existing drainage easements which have seriously eroded in the past and lead to damage of adjacent walls and other private property. 3) Construction of curb and gutter in the worst hit downstream streets to confine flows to the street in sections where the adjacent homes are below street level.
Construction for this project was completed in February 2013.
