Issuance of Special Oversize / Overweight Vehicle Permits in Mohave County, Arizona
Mohave County Public Works is responsible for perming legal travel over rights-of-way under the County’s ownership or control (“County Roads”) of oversize/overweight vehicle loads doing business within Mohave County, Arizona.
1. In accordance with the Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S.) 28-1103 and A.R.S. 28-1104, Mohave County with respect to highways under its jurisdicon may issue a special permit in wring, authorizing an applicant to operate or move a vehicle or combinaon of vehicles of a size or weight of vehicle or load exceeding the maximum specified in the A.R.S. 28-1093 through A.R.S. 28-1100.
2. Special permit requests must be received by the Mohave County Public Works at least two (2) working days prior to the need for issuance of the permit.
3. Special Permits for oversize/overweight (“OS/OW”) vehicles shall be issued in wring under the authority of the Mohave County Engineer (“County Engineer”) on a case-by-case basis, considering the condions of the roadway geometry, the pavement structure and the required pavement maintenance.
4. All OS/OW vehicles are required to carry the special OS/OW vehicle permit issued by the County Engineer in the vehicle or combinaon to which it refers, open to inspecon by any authorized agent or law enforcement officer.
5. Only Vehicles that have business in Mohave County, with a trip originang or having a desnaon in Mohave County, will be considered for an OS/OW special permit. Mohave County does not accommodate interstate OS/OW traffic on County Roads.
6. The gross weight and overall length of vehicles considered for special OS/OW vehicle permits are limited, in accordance with the A.R.S. 28-1100 and A.R.S. 28-1103, to the following:
• Single-axle load shall not exceed 20,000 pounds.
• Tandem-axle load shall not exceed 34,000 pounds.
• The gross vehicle weight of any combinaon shall not exceed 111,000 pounds.
• The overall length of the vehicle combinaon shall not exceed 92 feet.
If tandem axle is larger than 34,000 pounds or maximum weight is over 111,000 pounds, provide the following axle diagram informaon:
• Axle spacing
• Axle width
• Tires per axle
• Tire width
• Axle weight

7. The OS/OW vehicle special permits issued by the County Engineer have limitaons and restricons in accordance with the A.R.S. 28-1104, and as stated on each permit. Typical limitaons and restricons in Mohave County may include but may not be limited to the following items:
• Permit is valid from Sunrise to Sunset, no movement is permited on Saturday, Sunday, or designated holidays.
• Red Flags are required on all four corners at the widest points of the load / vehicle.
• Oversize load signs are required, front and rear of the load / vehicle.
• The Permitee is required to guard against overhead wires, overhead highway facilies, and detour underpasses where necessary.
• Front and rear escorts may be required.
• Front and rear escorts by police officers (Sheriff Depues) are required for loads of thirteen (13) feet in width or wider.
• Permit is invalid if weather condions drop visibility to less than 500 feet.
• Permit is invalid if ice or snow is on the roadway.
• Speed limit on County Roads is fieen (15) miles per hour below the posted speed limit.
• Advance noficaon of the Mohave County Public Works Department is required prior to each trip, by calling (928) 757-0910, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and at least two (2) working days prior to entering County Roads.
8. Mohave County Public Works charges fees (Effecve 7/1/2024) consistent with ARS §28-1105 as follows:
• Oversize: Single-trip permit $15, *30-day permit $30, *Annual permit $360.00 (ARS §28-1105 subsecon 1)
• Oversize/Overweight: Single-trip permit $75, *30-day permit $75, *Annual permit $360 Up to 123,500 lbs. (ARS §28-1105 subsecon 4 a and b)
• *Annual permit $600 - In excess size and weight of 123,500 lbs. up to 129,000 lbs. (ARS §28-1105 subsecon 4 c)
• *30-day and Annual Permits are subject to the same route, same load, and same equipment.
• Single-trip permits are valid for one week following the ancipated date of travel.
• Upon permit approval and issuance of a permit number, Mohave County will contact the applicant to make a payment based on the designated permit type.

Ø The permit is not valid unless and unl the fees are paid in full.

9. Unless otherwise posted, a special OS/OW vehicle permit is not required by Mohave County for vehicles not exceeding the maximum legal limits in Arizona as described in A.R.S. 28-1093 through A.R.S. 28-1100. Typically, a special OS/OW vehicle permit is not required if all following condions are met:
• Single-axle load does not exceed 20,000 pounds (A.R.S. 28-1100).
• Tandem-axle load does not exceed 34,000 pounds (A.R.S. 28-1100).
• Overall gross weight of the vehicle does not exceed 80,000 pounds (A.R.S. 28-1010).
• Outside width of the body of the vehicle does not exceed 8 feet (A.R.S. 28-1093).
• Total height (unladen or with a load) of the vehicle does not exceed a height of 13.5 feet above the level road surface, (A.R.S. 82-1094).
• The vehicle length does not exceed the limits given in A.R.S. 28-1095.
