  • Students must arrive on time and complete check-in prior to the start of the event.
  • Once the spelling bee has begun, students may not receive assistance from parents, teachers, or audience members.

Spelling Bee Rules

  • A practice round will be provided first and does not count toward the competition.
  • Students will be given one word at a time to spell.
  • The pronouncer will say each word slowly and clearly.
  • Students may ask for:
    • The word to be repeated
    • The word used in a sentence.
    • The definition of the word.
  • Students should begin spelling shortly after the word is given.
  • A student may pause and start over, but letters already spoken cannot be changed.
  • If a word is spelled incorrectly, the student will be eliminated.
  • No notes, books, or electronic devices are allowed during the competition.

Public Rules and Regulations

  • We know it is a very exciting time participating in the Spelling Bee. If you noticed your child’s name is spelled incorrectly in the program, we apologize in advance. If you are interested in keeping the program and would like to have it corrected, please let us know and we will email you the corrected program.
  • Food and beverages are not permitted in the auditorium; water bottles are allowed.
  • Restrooms and drinking fountains are located to the left of the auditorium. All other county offices and floors will be locked during the event.
  • Attendees are encouraged to eat prior to arrival, as the spelling bee may last several hours.
  • Families are encouraged to attend in person. If unable, a YouTube livestream link will be provided on our website and program.
  • If your student is eliminated, you may leave quickly and quietly after they have taken their seat.

Behavior and Sportsmanship

  • Students are expected to be respectful, polite, and supportive of others.
  • Good sportsmanship is a key part of the spelling bee experience.
  • Audience members must remain quiet during the competition.
  • Parents with young children, please step into the lobby if your child is disruptive. Failure to do so may result in being asked to leave.

Photos and Recording

  • The event will be photographed and livestreamed.
  • Photos of the first, second, and third-place winners will be taken immediately after the awards.
  • If you have concerns about photos or video, please contact us in advance.
