Traffic Signing and Striping
PURPOSE
This design directive presents Mohave County Public Works policies and standard details, supplementing the latest edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, on type, material, and placement of traffic control devices within the unincorporated public rights-of-ways of Mohave County.
STANDARDS

MATERIALS
• Sign retroreflectivity
- Provide minimum retroreflectivity levels in accordance with MUTCD Table 2A-3.
- White on green retroreflective sheeting – ASTM D4956 Type IV (Prismatic Reflective)
- Black on yellow retroreflective sheeting – ASTM D4956 Type IV (Prismatic Reflective)
- Black on orange retroreflective sheeting – ASTM D4956 Type IV (Prismatic Reflective)
- White on red retroreflective sheeting – ASTM D4956 Type IV (Prismatic Reflective)
- Black on white retroreflective sheeting – ASTM D4956 Type IV (Prismatic Reflective)
• Sign post
- Reference Mohave County Public Works Standard 131-2 for sign post and anchor requirements.
- Use 2-inch square perforated galvanized steel tubing.
- Provide 7/16-inch diameter holes drilled on 1-inch centers throughout length of post.
• Longitudinal pavement markings
- Use lead-free, waterborne traffic paint applied at a thickness of 0.0015 inches (15 mils).
- Apply Highway Safety Spheres consisting of a 1.50 refractive index to the traffic paint at a drop on rate of 4 pounds to 6 pounds per gallon.
• Transverse pavement markings and pavement symbol markings ➢ Use preformed thermoplastic, minimum 90 mils.
SIGNING POLICIES AND DETAILS
• STOP (R1-1) sign
- Reference Mohave County Public Works Standard Detail No. 131-2 (rev. 8/13/2013) for STOP sign design and placement requirements.
• Speed Limit (R2-1) sign
- Pursuant to Mohave County Public Works Residential and Business District Speed Limit Posting Policy, post regulatory Speed Limit signs at the entry(ies) on roads or streets (1/4 mile minimum) of a Residential District and/or Business District in such areas where such District(s) commence(s) to provide actual notice to motorists who are leaving public highways, roads, and streets with higher speed limits.
- Arizona Revised Statutes § 28-101 defines a Residential District and Business District.
- Arizona Revised Statutes § 28-701 establishes an altered prima facie regulatory speed limit in a Residential District or Business District of twenty-five (25) miles per hour.
• Street Name (D3-1) sign
- Reference Mohave County Public Works Standard Detail No. 132 for Street Name Signs and for design and placement requirements.
- Reference Street Name sign base and cross bracket details for mounting hardware requirements.
• Permanent roadway termination barricade
- Reference Mohave County Public Works Standard Detail No. 130-1 (rev. 9/25/2008) for design and placement requirements.
- Provide supplemental advance warning sign on terminating collector or arterial roadways.
PAVEMENT MARKING POLICIES AND DETAILS
• Longitudinal pavement markings
- Install centerline pavement markings on (1) all paved urban arterials/collectors with traveled way of 20 feet or more and Average Daily Traffic (ADT) volume of 4,000 vehicles per day or greater OR (2) all paved roadways with regulatory speed limit of 30 mph or greater.
- Apply broken centerline pavement markings consisting of a 40-foot cycle equaling a 10-foot segment separated by a 30-foot gap.
- Install edge line pavement markings on all paved roadways with a (1) traveled way of 20 feet or more in width and (2) posted regulatory speed limit of 45 mph or greater.
- Apply longitudinal centerline and edge line pavement markings at 6 inches in width and provide a 6-inch gap between lines comprising a double solid yellow centerline marking.
• Transverse pavement markings
- Install transverse stop lines12 inches wide supplementing 30 inch STOP signs and 16 inch wide supplementing 36 inch STOP signs on all paved intersection approaches greater than 100 feet in length with intersecting roadways having a posted regulatory speed limit of 35 mph or greater. Install stop lines 16 inches wide in advance of controlled intersection crosswalks, and install stop lines 24 inches wide at railroad crossings.
