Why is my water bill so high
DID YOU GET A HIGH WATER BILL????
Listed below are a few things you need to do before requesting a meter test.
*Locate your meter box on the property line next to the road. Use a large screwdriver to remove the lid, be careful not to break the wires; a circular disc on the lid is the electronic signal – a radio read. Use gloves to remove any dirt on the glass to read the numbers.
*Check the meter reading – Compare the reading on the meter to the current reading on the bill. (Be sure to add the stationary zero (0) at the end of the numbers).
*Check to see if the triangle on the meter is spinning. A spinning meter indicates water is going through the meter. A continuous spin shows that there is a leak, such as a broken water line. When the dial spins, stops, spins, this is generally a float leak (toilet, swamp cooler, irrigation system).
*You have a leak!!!
Once you determine you have a leak, you need to isolate the house from the property by shutting the water off going into the house.
Meter stopped spinning? The leak is either inside or under the house.
Meter still spinning? The leak is in the yard.
Check your irrigation system, a leak may not be noticeable unless the system is running – look for broken sprinkler heads, missing emitters or breaks in piping or tubing. Soil conditions are such that in much of the area the water quickly filters into the ground, leaving little evidence.
Check for leaks inside the house including toilets, faucets, showers, sinks, washing machine, hot water heater, icemaker, water softener, dishwasher, also we suggest checking your swamp cooler – look at float and hose lines, etc.
To check toilet for a leak: put toilet strip or food coloring in the reservoir or tank, wait 15-30 minutes. If the water in the bowl changes colors without flushing, the rubber flapper needs to be replaced. Some leaks are very small. A leak that runs 24 hours a day will add up to a large water bill.
Have a leak repaired quickly! You are responsible for all the water that goes through your meter. Delaying repairs can be costly.
To determine how much water you use, be sure that no one is using water, read your meter everyday at the same time to compare usage from one day to the next.
If you have experienced a leak please contact the GVID office to determine if your account is eligible for a water leak adjustment.
