Candidate Statement:

I am running for the Lake Havasu Unified School District Governing Board because good schools form the basis of a strong community. I raised my family in Lake Havasu City, and my sons attended our schools and eventually graduated from Lake Havasu High School. As a parent, taxpayer, and local business owner, I have personally seen how important our schools are to our children's future and our community.

I have been the owner and manager of Main Stitch Upholstery for the last 19 years. The experience of managing a small business has taught me the importance of listening to people, of handling money responsibly, of finding solutions to problems, and of taking responsibility for the decisions I take. You also need to be prepared to ask questions if a situation doesn't make sense. These are the qualities I shall bring to the governing board.

My first consideration will always be our students and their education. We need high academic standards while ensuring students get the support and opportunities they need to succeed. We must also support our teachers and staff. We must recruit and retain quality educators, and we must keep seeking responsible ways to make salaries and benefits competitive.

Safety in schools is also something we need to focus on. Schools should be environments where students feel safe, accepted, and prepared to learn. I support our School Resource Officers and think the district should look into ways to increase their number. However, school safety also requires
cooperation. Parents need to be informed about what is going on in their children's lives, schools need to build strong links with families, and students should know they have adults they can go to when there's a problem.

I also believe taxpayers deserve careful oversight of district finances. Every dollar entrusted to the district should be used responsibly and with a clear purpose. When the district asks taxpayers for additional support, the community deserves to understand what the money is for, why it is needed,
and how it will benefit students.

Most important of all, I will listen. Although parents, teachers, staff, students, and taxpayers will not always agree, every individual should be given a chance to have his or her say and be treated with respect. Those who serve on the board should ask questions, look into the information available to them, and reach decisions based on what is best for the district rather than their own personal agendas.

Lake Havasu has always been my family's home, and the schools played a role in preparing my sons for the future. I want to give back to the community that helped raise them by serving with integrity, common sense, accountability, and dedication to our students.

I would be honored to earn your support and the opportunity to serve on the Lake Havasu Unified School District Governing Board.
