INSPECTIONS & COMPLIANCE
Food establishments are licensed and routinely inspected to reduce the risk of foodborne illness.
What To Expect
Inspectors identify:
- Critical violations (directly contribute to illness)
- Non-critical violations (support conditions contributing to foodborne illness)
Inspection ratings:
- Excellent: No critical violations and five or less non-critical violations.
- Satisfactory: Critical violation(s)corrected during inspection and five or less non-critical violations.
- Needs Improvement: Critical violation(s) cannot be corrected during inspection or more than five non-critical violations. Issues require follow-up inspection.
- Unacceptable: Gross, unsanitary conditions posing an imminent health hazard. Requires closure.
Establishments are required to post their rating where the public can see it.
FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS
The Environmental Health team licenses, inspects, and provides guidance to restaurants, grocery stores, mobile food units, and temporary food vendors to help keep food safe for residents and visitors.
To open a food business:
1. Contact Environmental Health
2. Submit plans for review (if required)
3. Complete construction
4. Schedule inspection
5. Receive approval to operate
FOOD SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Facilities are inspected regularly and must comply with the Arizona Food Code. Annual fees apply.
