Service Animals

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), service animals are dogs (and in some cases miniature horses) that are individually trained to perform specific tasks directly related to a person’s disability.

Emotional support animals, comfort animals, and therapy animals are not considered service animals under the ADA.

Businesses may ask only two questions:

  1. Is the animal required because of a disability?
  2. What work or task has the animal been trained to perform?

Businesses may not ask about the person’s disability or require documentation.

A service animal may be removed if it:

  • Is not under control
  • Is not housebroken
  • Poses a direct threat to health or safety
  • Fundamentally alters the nature of the service provided
